On the other hand, the 1018 handles thin lines better than many printers. The biggest problems are obvious dithering patterns and an unevenness in solid fills. Graphics quality was also typical for a monochrome laser, which means it's easily good enough for internal business use, but I wouldn't hand it to an important client if I were trying to convey a sense of professionalism. Text was well formed and easy to read at 4 points in the majority of fonts we test, 5 points in all but one font, and 10 points in one highly stylized, hard-to-print font. Text quality just misses being the best available, which means the 1018 can handle any text you want to print. Output quality, at least, is fully up to laser standards. It's only on longer files, notably our 50-page Microsoft Word files, that the slower engine speed becomes significant in a practical sense.
It also helps that on short files such as one- or two-page letters, the speed difference is only a second or two. That's enough of a difference to be noticeable, but I wouldn't call it intolerable, and I'm pretty impatient about waiting for printers. On our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software), the 1018's total time was 11 minutes 28 seconds, compared with roughly 8:50 for the Lexmark and Samsung printers. Given the low engine speed, I wasn't surprised to find that the 1018 is the slowest monochrome laser printer in its price range. The rated engine speed is only 12 pages per minute, compared with 22 ppm for the similarly priced Samsung ML-2010 and 20 ppm for the somewhat more expensive (and network-ready) Lexmark E120n.
Speed is not one of the printer's strong points, although it's not slow enough to count as a serious problem.
